With the economy as uncertain as it is and with money on everyone's mind even childbirth may not be reason enough to give up work for a while. However, if you don't feel comfortable putting your brand new baby in daycare then what other choices do you have that still allows the potential for an income?
If you are willing to consider working from home then you do have options. The first of these options will depend on what work you did before childbirth.
Not all vocations will offer flexibility regarding where you work, but the improvements in Internet technology means that an increasing number of jobs are now accessible from home. If you work in any office-based career it may be worth investigating whether you can continue in your current role - from home. Even if your current company does not allow telecommuting it may be possible to use the experience and knowledge gained in your current role to apply for another job in the same field, with a company that does permit work from home.
If this is not possible or if you work in a vocation with no at home work possibilities (for instance a wait staff position, or perhaps bar work) then you will need to consider alternative solutions. This is where you meet the first hurdle common to new parenthood - unpredictability.
Newborns are unlikely to instantly fit into a schedule you find convenient. Babies often take a period of time to adjust and this requires parental patience. Even when a schedule is established, things may change at the drop of a hat if the baby refuses to sleep, wakes up early, or gets sick.
This means any work you do needs to be extremely flexible. You can't be expected to be on the computer or phone at a specified time if you have an infant at home. You need to be able to pick up the work when you are free to do so. What type of at home work fits that description?
This will largely depend on the skills you already have. For instance if you are sufficiently adept with computers you may be able to fix machines clients bring to you. If you are able to design and build websites then you can market that skill, working when the baby is sleeping or content.
There are other careers that require training, and if you are planning on working long-term from home then perhaps you could train for this while pregnant. Medical transcription is one position that is well paying and flexible, but with specific skills and training required.
If you have a hobby that results in product creation you may try developing an at home business based on that hobby. This may include knitting or sewing clothes for sale. If sewing is your passion then advertising services as a seamstress; repairing and altering clothes in the comfort of your home may be appropriate.
Some at home call centers also allow you to work when convenient, or require only a minimal two hours a week to be scheduled. This can allow you to pick up more when time is available. This provides convenience with the comfort of being an employee rather than self-employed.
You have more control over your destiny when you work from home. With so many options you are bound to find something to fit your new family's unique and unexpected needs!
