Reduce Stress When You Do Business

A free article on Work Life Balance

Few of us are fortunate enough to be completely free of anxiety, the depression, even the pain that full blown stress can bring to our lives. Unfortunately, redirecting a business or solo practice causes us to maneuver ourselves into demanding and uncertain situations that results in our bodies priming for battle.

Stress is what we feel when the demands on our lives exceed our ability to meet those demands. What is more, the situations that create stress are unique to the individual. For some, stress may take place when and article needs to be written for promoting a new product. For others stress starts building whenever there is an oral presentation to be given. Still others have trouble keeping their blood pressure down when road construction has you crawling and you are going to be late for your next appointment.

Stress levels, like so many other things, are not one size fits all. We experience stress at different levels. Low levels, for example, may not be noticeable. For instance, if your computer tends to run slow in the afternoon you are not going to be too excited because you are accustomed to that happening. On the other hand, if your internet connection fails altogether, and so much of your business is done over the internet, you are going to be one very unhappy person.

The problem is that continued stress can have a considerable impact on your health. Indeed, some researchers claim that stress is one of the prime causes of aging. The one thing you do not want is to be worn out before you change the direction of your practice or your business or even before you start a project. The changes are likely to bring you additional stress and you will certainly be overwhelmed.

Learn what soothes and relaxes you. It may be going to the driving range and hitting a bucket of balls. It may be going for a walk, listening to music, calling a friend, or washing your hair. It does not matter as long as it gives you pause to think about what is happening to your mind and your body. Then it is up to you to get back in shape so you can tackle the problem, create solutions, or just create.

The worst aspect of chronic stress is that we get used to it and ignore it because it is familiar and sometimes almost comfortable. Procrastinators, for example, count on it so they finish their project just at the deadline.

The problem is stress inhibits problem solving and clear thinking because it can mess up your blood flow which may mean your brain is not getting the oxygen it needs to think. It can disrupt your digestive system and then you can hardly concentrate on your business. Stress itself may not make you sick but it does impact your immune system, but it can inhibit the system and then you are more likely to succumb to colds and the flu. That certainly will not help business.

Our goal is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to live with it and how to use it efficiently. Here are some stress reduction techniques you may want to consider:

Make a healthy lifestyle your goal. A diet rich in a variety of whole grains, vegetables and fruits in combination with exercise will maintain optimum health. People experiencing chronic stress usually require a higher intake of vitamins, especially vitamin B complex.

Learn to relax with deep breathing exercises often described in Yoga.

Engage in physical activity on a regular basis including aerobic exercise and stretching.

Write. There is increased evidence that writing 10-15 minutes daily about stressful events and circumstances helps relieve stress.

Recognize what you can change and change them. Recognize what you can avoid and avoid them. Recognize what you can eliminate and eliminate those activities which give you the most stress and the least enjoyment.

Be realistic. Do not expect too much of yourself.

And forget about striving for absolute control. You are just wasting your time.
