Even though some may make it seem easy to do, learning to type is no walk in the park for others. With the invention of the typewriter came a whole new horizon for communication. No longer was it necessary to painstakingly write down letters, books or novels by hand. All of a sudden, there was little need for quills and inkbottles.

Then the modern man invented the computer, and thus, other, more primitive, human beings had to adapt and become skilled at the use of the keyboard or else lose out entirely on the pleasures of advanced technology.

Nowadays, e-mails, online chatting, blogging and the creation of live journals and online communities have become all the rage for the civilized individual. With their busy schedules and full days, instant messaging has become quite a necessity for almost every citizen. Those who have not mastered these skills, sadly, are left behind to eat dust.

And yet, we were all beginners at some point in our lives. We all had to start somewhere, did we not? Therefore, typing games were born. The rest, as they say, is history.

Who could forget the elementary exercise that was Word Balloon? The mechanics were fairly easy and direct: correctly tap out the word inside the balloon and pop it. Games like these were responsible for building the foundation of our keyboard prowess and prepared us for the ongoing battle that is online messaging.

You may have encountered the very basic Word Zap, a veritable rite of passage for beginners, wherein one had to simply type the word correctly and zap it into oblivion faster than it could sink lower and lower then disappear entirely into the bottom of the screen; much like one had to correctly maneuver Tetris tiles into precise position before they hit the floor.

A slightly more sophisticated version is Fly Trap, which shows a large frog sitting patiently on a lily pad, anticipating the taps of your fingers on the right letters, thus rewarding it with delicious letter flies that it could snatch up in an instant with its long, sticky tongue.

Countless people are unconsciously getting hooked on games like TextTwist, one of the more modern teasers that have been developed recently, which exercises not only your digital muscles but also your brain cells, as it involves twisting letters around to form as many words as you can from a single set of randomly arranged letter tiles in limited time.

These games may seem inconsequential to others, but they can actually be quite fun once you get to try them out. Gamers may even go so far as to say they can be quite addictive, keeping you glued to the computer screen, plinking away on the keys like a pianist writing a concerto.

There are probably a gazillion more very creative, fun and colorful typing games that exist online, just waiting to be discovered and introduced to the world. With games like these, it is easy to see that learning to type does not necessarily have to be boring and tiresome.
