6 Ways to Reduce Worry and Anxiety Instantly

A free article on Stress Management

By: Jimmy Cox

Many anxiety sufferers I speak to find they worry constantly about not only their current circumstances, but what if scenarios.

This is a major problem if you don't know how to gain some control over your worrying thoughts because it contributes to feelings of anxiety, lack of joy in your life, foggy thinking and feeling generally sick most of the time.

Obviously if you are feeling this way you want to do something about it. Over time it is possible to train your thoughts and help reduce your level of worry.

Action Tip 1 - Accept That You Worry And Life Is Full Of Surprises

People who worry often worry about things they don't know yet. None of us know for sure what events are going to occur in the future or how our life will turn out.

It is important to begin to accept the uncertainly that comes with living and learn to expect the best, and enjoy the element of surprise.

Next time you find yourself thinking about all that things that could or might go wrong - stop your thoughts in their tracks and claim to yourself "that really is old limited thinking and I am no longer choosing to think that way". Immediately think of a good thought to distract yourself and say "I am now going to think about..."

Action Tip 2 - Set Aside A Time Each Day For Worrying

This may seem crazy but scheduling in a worry time into you day can give you the rest of the day to lighten up the load. Make it the same time each day before late afternoon so the rest of the afternoon evening can be time to wind down.

Personally I like to get it over with before I set off for the day. Take no longer than 20 mins and keep a worry diary to fully get these thoughts out of your mind. Start a new page each day and don't go over the previous pages - those thoughts have been dealt with and are gone now.

At the end of the 20 minute session write a positive statement to fill you mind with good thought energy for the rest of the day. If throughout the day you have a worry write it on a note and file it (in pocket, wallet etc to add to your next worry time) and then let it go.

Action Tip 3 - Start Changing Negative Thoughts To Positive Ones

This takes time so be kind to yourself. Begin to take notice of your dominating thoughts. If you think of something negative about yourself or a situation immediately stop the thought.

I like to say "Not that thought" to myself when these pop in and then immediately search for a good thought. Even better, you may be able to asses the thought and think about a positive way of looking at it and affirm to yourself I now... and complete the sentence with a positive thought.

Action Tip 4 - Find Out How To Relax

Over time, you will be able to learn how to relax if you are persistent in your method. I recently got onto a local group that hold free meditation workshops to teach you how to have a still mind to meditate. I have found this very beneficial.

Other methods you can try include: gardening, reading a positive uplifting book (not negative, frightening etc), yoga, breathing exercises, aromatherapy bath, a walk at the local park or near water.

Action Tip 5 - Looking After Your Body

When many people hear diet or healthy eating habits they discredit it as having no real impact however it has been proven that our modern way of eating is filled with "pretend" food having little or no nutrient benefit.

Our bodies were designed to function with nutrients and when they are lacking this contributes to feeling anxious, stressed, negative, tired etc.

- Eat as much raw food as you can. I aim for 51% or more raw foods in my diet each day and I have felt the effects of this on my mind for the better.
- Limit caffeine, alcohol and avoid toxins like nicotine and many personal care products filled with toxins like SLS, SLES and propylene glycol which may be stored in your organs.
- Clean living is best to fully live healthily and happily.

Action Tip 6 - Personal Development

I cannot underestimate the importance of personal development. Begin by reading books on empowering your life, positive thoughts and emotions and take up any local courses offered. This will give you a greater understanding of the way you think, why you think the way you do and how best to live by changing your thoughts.

You will benefit with greater resilience when things do go wrong and the ability to move forward to create positive outcomes.

Good luck with your anxiety strategies.
